Cummins increases standby power capacity at LPG filling stations in Turkey

Aygaz, a major liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) company in Turkey, recently increased backup power capacity at three of its filling terminals by replacing existing standby generators with new ones. Aygaz selected Cummins for the upgrade due to the company's ability to fulfill the specifications and meet a tight project schedule.

Cummins Turkey supplied one C66D5 unit to the facility in Erzurum, one C825D5A unit to Istanbul and one C1100D5B unit to Hatay. All units have tailor-made modular cabins. Cummins Turkey also provided installation, commissioning and two years of parts and maintenance.

As Turkey’s seventh largest industrial organization, Aygaz manufactures and sells LPG devices, and distributes LPG as auto gas, cylinder gas and bulk gas. Cummins and Aygaz have partnered on previous projects, and cite the strong relationship, reliability, ability to provide turnkey solutions and fast delivery as key factors.

Mechanical Design training brings Cummins distributor and dealer engineers to Daventry, UK

Following the first edition of a redesigned Cummins Application Engineering Training Program, Part 2 – Mechanical Design was delivered by the Sales Application Engineering team in Daventry, UK, from 27th to 30th November 2017. In total, 22 people from across Cummins European distributors and dealers attended the course.

The first edition of Part 1 – Product Selection, was delivered in May, at the Cummins Holland facilities in Dordrecht, Netherlands. The objective of Part 2 is primarily to focus on the mechanical considerations required for project design and implementation. Due to its technical nature, the course was targeted at engineers seeking to develop and improve their skills and knowledge in this field.

Unlike the previous Application Engineering Training Program, the new program introduced in 2017 divided the training into three standalone courses: Product Selection, Mechanical Design and Electrical Design. These trainings provide engineers from varied backgrounds with the necessary skills and tools to leverage sales and select and install Cummins products effectively. Each course includes a number of modules and are more focused on real case studies and practical examples.

Part 2 training consisted of the following modules, which included challenging calculations and class exercises:

  • Fuel Systems
  • Fuel Tanks Pipework
  • Cooling Systems
  • Remote Cooling & Heat Exchangers
  • Exhaust Systems
  • Noise Considerations
  • Mechanical Installations
  • Genset Mounting Considerations
  • Gas Considerations

The training team introduced a live power generation installation review, carried out at the Cummins Service Training School in Daventry, as well as a plant tour at Cummins Daventry Engine Plant.

The last day of the training is set aside for the exam. Attendees are given four hours to complete questions related to the work covered in the training, as well as calculating expected exhaust back pressures to cooling system restrictions. The training is challenging with an expected pass mark of 85%.

The team is now looking forward to delivering Part 3 – Electrical Design in Q2 2018, date and location to be confirmed.

Cummins expands QuietConnect Series with release of new generators

Cummins Inc. announces the new RS125 and RS150 in the QuietConnect Series, now ranging from 13 kW up to 150 kW to back up homes and small businesses of various sizes and power requirements. The 125 kW and 150 kW models will be available in early January 2018, just in time for the winter storm season. Every year during winter storm season, hundreds of thousands – sometimes millions – of people lose power, which, in many cases also means loss of heat.

“The release of RS125 and RS150 reinforces Cummins commitment to providing power that homes and small businesses can rely on when they need it most,” according to George Iarca, Territory Manager for the South Central Region at Cummins. “Our new generators are designed to power up seamlessly when the power goes down, providing home and business owners with a peace of mind that their families and businesses won’t be without lights and heat during the winter months or air conditioning during the summer months.”

The new generators run on natural gas and are built to weather everything from biting winter storms to high-powered hurricanes. Both models are designed to operate under extreme environmental conditions including cold weather well below 0°F and winds up to 180 miles per hour when equipped with the necessary accessories. The generator can also operate reliably in ambient temperatures up to 122°F, providing peace of mind to consumers worried about grid failure due to extreme heat.

Largest mixed-use development in Istanbul powered by Cummins in third phase

One of the newest icons of Istanbul has again turned to Cummins for a complete standby power system.

After providing the standby power in the first and second phases of the 42 Maslak building project, Cummins Turkey has now delivered the power for the third phase, in the form of 2 x Cummins C1675D5A generator sets together with master panel and fuel tank. Cummins Turkey also performed full mechanical installation and commissioning, along with providing technical support throughout the planning and implementation. Cummins’ product quality and performance was noted as a key factor for the continued partnership.

42 Maslak has become known as the largest and most comprehensive mixed-life center in Istanbul, set in a 250,000 m² area and consisting of four different concepts – residences, multi-offices, flat offices and a mall for shopping, dining and entertainment – across two 42-floor towers.

The customer, Bay Construction, continues to rely on Cummins for the project due to the strong relationship with Cummins Turkey and the team’s ability to provide a turnkey solution as a project partner.

The Lake Michigan Chapter of the 7x24 Exchange hosted an event on Dec. 7 at the Gibson Electric & Technology Solutions headquarters in Downers Grove, Illinois (USA). Over 100 data center end-users, consulting engineers and contractors gathered for the information sharing and networking event, in which Cummins participated on a panel with other industry manufacturers and service providers.

In the panel discussion, Rich Scroggins, Product Application Technical Marketing Specialist for Cummins, joined industry professionals from Syska Hennessy, Caterpillar, Interstate Power, Hitzinger and Gibson Electric & Technology Solutions. Topics discussed included:

  • How generators in data center applications compare to other facilities and applications, and what features on these systems have evolved due to these differences
  • Emission regulations affecting generators, specifically to those in data center facilities
  • How various fuel systems for generators have evolved and what technologies have been utilized to improve data center operations
  • Where DRUPS and DeRUPS systems are being deployed vs. battery UPS, and the pros and cons to these systems

The evening also included Building Information Modeling (BIM) demonstrations, Gibson factory tours and live generator and loadbank demos.
